Work begins on new La Matilla cultural centre in Fuerteventura

Puerto del Rosario council has begun replacing La Matilla’s cultural centre after its partial collapse. Plans include a library, hall and accessible facilities.

Work has begun on a new cultural centre in La Matilla, in Fuerteventura’s Puerto del Rosario council area. It will replace the village’s former community building.

The project was reported on 3 November 2026. It will restore a venue for local social and cultural activities.

The old centre partially collapsed in May 2023. It was then closed and demolished after technical reports found it to be in poor condition.

What the new centre will include

The new building will have about 413 square metres of built floor area. Plans include a bar with a kitchen, an events hall, a members’ room and a library. There will also be an office, storage rooms and toilets.

The design includes spaces adapted for people with reduced mobility. Puerto del Rosario council says the building will meet requirements to ensure access for everyone.

Part of the adjoining square will be improved to provide a barbecue and picnic area. This will give residents more space to meet outside the centre.

Traditional materials in a replacement building

The centre will have a layout similar to the old building. Its updated design will use volcanic stone, wood and lime finishes.

The work marks the start of replacing the community facility lost after the structural damage in 2023. The report gives no completion date or details of when residents can start using the new centre.
