Tech for the Majorero countryside

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Department of New Technologies, held today the Island Day of Technology Applied to the Primary Sector (AGROTECH). The event was aimed at professionals in agriculture, livestock and fisheries to introduce them to digital tools and promote the modernization of farms.

The Gran Tarajal Agricultural Cooperative hosted the activity, thanks to coordination with the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing, the Tuineje City Council, and the cooperative itself.

Carmen Alonso, Minister of New Technologies, explained:

“The goal is to keep bringing digital tools to our population, so they understand the real applications in different areas and in everyday life. In this case, the day focuses on the work of the Majorero field and sea, featuring experts, real cases, and specialized companies.”

She added that this is “not only a day, but an important step in the strategy so the primary sector can seize all opportunities offered by technological innovation.”

David Herrera, Mayor of Tuineje, emphasized:

“In our municipality we are a reference in the primary sector, and it is essential to move hand‑in‑hand with innovation and new technologies.”

Also present were councilors Jonathan Peña (Tuineje) and David de León (Puerto del Rosario), as well as Andrés Díaz, Director General of Livestock.

Challenges for the Primary Sector

Enrique Pérez, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing, delivered the opening lecture, highlighting the main challenges facing Fuerteventura’s agriculture, livestock, and fisheries—particularly water efficiency and the arid Majorero climate.

“The challenge ahead for the primary sector is very complicated. Fuerteventura suffers significant limitations such as double insularity and rising production costs, which are amplified by the current international crisis. Therefore, it is crucial to create synergies across different fields, especially technology, and continue consuming our local product.”
