Fuerteventura’s AMF plans executive meeting over disputed Cabildo candidacy

AMF president Juan Nicolás Cabrera plans an executive meeting as members dispute the choice of candidate for Fuerteventura’s island council.

Juan Nicolás Cabrera, president of Asambleas Municipales de Fuerteventura (AMF), has announced plans for a meeting of the party’s island executive. It follows a dispute over the party’s candidate for the Cabildo, Fuerteventura’s island council.

Cabrera spoke at Hotel El Mirador de Fuerteventura in Puerto del Rosario on Wednesday 4 November. He said he would call the meeting the following week. The date was still to be confirmed. Members would hear about developments and be asked to consider the leadership’s actions.

The dispute centres on Cabrera’s candidacy. Some party members have sought to nominate Mayra Marichal instead. She is an AMF councillor in Puerto del Rosario.

How the dispute developed

Cabrera said the selection process began in September. Former Cabildo president Sergio Lloret had said he could not stand for personal reasons.

In a vote on 30 September, Antigua mayor Juan Cabrera received nine votes. Juan Nicolás Cabrera received seven. The AMF president said he challenged the result. He argued that three people who voted were not members of the island executive and should not have taken part.

Juan Cabrera later withdrew his candidacy. Juan Nicolás Cabrera said the electoral alliance of AMF, Nueva Canarias and Juntos por Pájara then chose him.

Some members later asked for a meeting of the island executive to nominate Marichal. Cabrera questioned whether the request had enough support. He said he later received minutes recording her selection.

Meeting and internal inquiry planned

The group challenging Cabrera’s candidacy submitted two appeals to the party’s management committee. One sought to cancel the selection process. According to the report, the committee rejected that appeal on Tuesday 3 November because it had been submitted late. The second appeal concerned a request to call a meeting of the island executive.

Cabrera also announced an inquiry to gather information. He said he favoured talks but did not rule out formal action against members at a later stage. This could include expulsion.

Alliance sources consulted by La Voz de Fuerteventura described the dispute as an internal AMF matter. They said it had no repercussions for Nueva Canarias or Juntos por Pájara.
