Final preparations for the Grand Taifas Ball this Friday, May 29
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is putting the finishing touches on the Grand Taifas Dance, which will take place this Friday, May 29, at the fairgrounds in Puerto del Rosario. The event is organized by the Island’s Department of Culture together with the Puerto del Rosario City Council. A new feature for this year is that the doors will open at 19:15 to ensure a smoother flow, the island authority announced in a press release after a visit by Cabildo President Lola García, Puerto del Rosario Mayor David de Vera, Culture Councilor Rayco León, and area councilor Juan Manuel Verdugo.
Attire and Performances at the Grand Taifas Dance
The celebration will showcase the “Indumentaria Viva” exhibition, curated by Juan Carlos Romero and Oliver Ojeda. Attendees are reminded to wear traditional clothing to participate. During the event, a customary recognition will be given to those who work to preserve traditional dress as an expression of Canarian and Majorero identity.
Music will be provided by groups from Fuerteventura and the other islands. As usual, the Islander School of Music will open the program, this year represented by the Valles de Ortega and La Oliva campuses. Performing ensembles include:
- Tababaire (Fuerteventura)
- Parranda El Callao (Fuerteventura)
- Parranda El Golpito (Lanzarote)
- Parranda Los Muchachos (Tenerife)
- Parranda El Alpiste (Gran Canaria)
“The Most Crowded Event of Canary Islands Day”
“It is the most crowded event of Canary Islands Day across the entire archipelago and the climax of the ‘May 100 % Canarias’ program that the Cabildo has organized to celebrate who we are and highlight our traditions and artistic expressions,” said President Lola García.
“May the young, hand‑in‑hand with the elders, feel proud of who we are and what it means to be Canarians, Majoreros, and Majoreras.”
“The Grand Taifas Dance is one of the most anticipated dates for the whole of Fuerteventura, so we must highlight the excellent organization by the Cabildo’s Culture Department and all the other involved bodies, as well as the Puerto del Rosario City Council. We also thank the local police, security forces, civil protection, cultural groups, and, above all, the Majorero community that always responds to this special day,” García added.
Mayor David de Vera thanked the Cabildo for its effort:
“It is an event to celebrate and value our identity and our deep connection to our territory.”
Culture Councilor Rayco León explained the significance of the finale:
“After an intense month of programming dedicated to the Canary Islands, we close with this Grand Taifas Dance, sharing a special night of music and our customs.”
