Canary Islands employment registrations reach record 989,058 in October
October 2026 figures show record Social Security registrations in the Canary Islands, but unemployment rose over the month. No separate figures were given for Fuerteventura.
The Canary Islands ended October 2026 with a record 989,058 people registered with Social Security. This was up 3.22% on October last year. The figures were reported by La Voz de Fuerteventura on 4 November.
The figures give Fuerteventura residents a view of the regional jobs market. The report does not give separate figures for the island.
Unemployment rises over the month but falls over the year
Registered unemployment across the islands stood at 141,518 people in October. That was 1,215 more than in September, a rise of 0.87%. Across Spain, the monthly rise was 1.81%.
Compared with October 2025, registered unemployment fell by 6,161 people, or 4.17%. Women accounted for 3,860 of that fall.
Despite the monthly rise, this was the second-lowest registered unemployment total for an October since 2007. The report linked the rise to seasonal factors. It also noted that 651 people had registered as first-time jobseekers.
Long-term unemployment also fell. There were 62,574 people in this group, down 4,259 over the year and 261 since September.
Fewer contracts signed
A total of 67,040 employment contracts were signed across the Canary Islands in October. This was down 4.83% on the same month last year and 3.74% on September. Permanent contracts made up 43.18% of the total. Women accounted for 48.9% of contracts signed.
Registered unemployment fell over the year in every sector of the economy. The largest percentage falls were in retail and commerce (9.86%), construction (8.84%) and hospitality (3.53%). Hospitality includes hotels and restaurants. However, the number of contracts signed in that sector fell by 12.97% over the year. This shows the difference between unemployment totals and the number of new contracts signed.
